Like I said on my dry erase to-do list frame tutorial I’ve been in organizing mode since the beginning of the year. So the other day I decided I would organize my fabric stash and share my tips and tricks on doing so and the messiness of the process off course, cause who doesn’t like to look at other people’s messes?!
1 . Make sure you have room to work in. You will need to dump everything out first before you put everything away so clear an area for you to work in. You will also need to set up your iron and ironing board.
2. Embrace the messiness!! Chances are if you’re a crafter/sewer then you’re also probably a fabric hoarder. So remember: It has to get worse before it gets better. Don’t freak out if you feel overwhelmed by the sheer volume of your stash.
3. Tidy up each used fabric piece. Grab your scissors and cut any small pieces of fabric hanging from your used pieces. Keep any usable pieces in a bag to use in quilts, small projects and/or pillow filling.
4. Iron each piece of fabric. This will make everything nice and crisp and will also kill off any nasty dust mites and bacteria.
5. Decide on a sorting system. How are you going to sort your fabrics? I decided to sort my fabrics by type (cotton, synthetic, heavy etc.) and then by color.
And that’s pretty much it! Store your fabric in bags/boxes/shelves, take a step back and admire your pretty, organized stash! Oh, and decide what you’re going to sew next too!
