Hey guys! Happy Labor Day! Ok, I’ll be honest…today’s recipe isn’t really a recipe but it is a delicious quick dish, so give it a try, you’ll love it, trust me.
To make an authentic Cretan dakos you need barley rusks. They’re basically really dry and really hard, thick bread slices. But if you’re outside of Greece it’s kind of tough to find them. So what can you do? Well, you can use 2 day(or more, the harder the better) old bread and it’s pretty much the same thing! Just use whole wheat, barley or rye bread, white won’t cut it, sorry!
Almost Cretan Dakos or the easiest salad ever.
- 1 loaf, 2 day old whole wheat/barley/rye bread
- 2 medium ripe tomatoes
- 1/2 cup feta cheese
- 3 Tbsp olive oil
- 1/2 tsp dried oregano
- salt & pepper
- Moisten the bread with some water. Just run it under the tap for a few seconds. Wrap it in a clean towel and set aside.
- Dice the tomatoes.
- Cut the bread into chunks with your hands and place in a bowl. Drizzle with the olive oil on top.
- Top with the diced tomatoes.
- Crumble the feta with your fingers over everything.
- Add seasonings and that’s it! Enjoy!
This dish is great as a light lunch or as a salad with your main course.
Enjoy!
